Innovation Network: Wearable Technologies and Tech Innovation

Our Innovation Network is a series of quarterly breakfast events hosted by The Yorkshire Post. Events feature industry and corporate speakers, and address current topics that are of relevance to business. The next Innovation Network event will address to the topic of Wearable Technologies and Tech Innovation, and is organised in partnership with the Centre for Knowledge Exchange (CKE).


Events are free to attend and are targeted at businesses, policy makers and anyone interested in technology and future trends.

The central theme of each event is Innovation – a key driver for growth and sustainability – and the challenges faced by businesses looking to innovate. In addition to hearing from expert speakers, the Innovation Network offers a great opportunity for you to meet peers and gain new business contacts. 


Professor Mohammad Dastbaz, Dean of Arts, Environment and Technology and Pro Vice Chancellor, Leeds Beckett University. Mohammad's background is in the design and development of digital media systems. As Professor of Informatics his main research has been focused on the use of emerging technologies.

Mohammad will be speaking about how Universities can support businesses in the development of new technologies, and the role Universities play in ensuring that the employees of the future are equipped with relevant skills and knowledge.

Steven Webb, General Counsel and Group Company Secretary at Premier Farnell. Steven’s role involves responsibility for CSR and group insurance, in addition to secretarial/legal areas. He has managed a strategic review of the business, led negotiations with key customers and suppliers, and worked on group re-branding projects.

Steven will be speaking about Premier Farnell’s novel approach to innovation; including areas such as wearable technologies, Raspberry Pi (a tiny and affordable computer used to learn programming), the Internet of Things and the importance of developing collaborative partnerships. Their partnership approach helps Premier Farnell to inspire the next generation of innovators but also to bring fresh thinking to their own business.

John Burrows, Business Development Manager, Leeds Beckett University. John focuses on Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) – business support projects funded by Innovate UK. Previously, John worked for Innovate UK as a regional KTP adviser. John has over twenty years of business development experience within advanced engineering environments, working with BAE Systems, Ultra Electronics, Courtaulds Advanced Composites and the Midlands Aerospace Alliance. 

John will be speaking about the funding that businesses and access through Innovate UK to support research and development.

The Centre for Knowledge Exchange (CKE) is an enterprise hub based at Leeds Beckett University which connects University research, knowledge and expertise with the regional built environment sector. You can find out more about CKE here.
